The science behind streak-free windows

Because “clean” shouldn’t mean “streaky”

You’ve just cleaned your windows. You step back to admire your handiwork… and there they are. Streaks. Everywhere. It’s enough to make you want to pull the curtains and pretend you never tried.

At Willoughby’s Windows, we know that streak-free glass isn’t just a matter of elbow grease, it’s all about the right tools, the right water, and a bit of know-how. Here’s the lowdown on why some windows sparkle, and others… don’t.

Why do streaks happen?

Streaks are what’s left behind when water and cleaning solutions dry unevenly. And in places like Southern Hampshire (where hard water is the norm) it’s even more common.

Minerals like calcium and magnesium stick around after water evaporates, leaving those chalky white trails on your lovely clean glass. Add in a bit of sun drying things too quickly, and it’s a recipe for smudgy disappointment.

Our secret weapon: purified water

We don’t mess about with buckets and tap water. Our pole-fed window cleaning system uses purified water – that means it’s been filtered to remove all those pesky minerals.

So when it dries? It leaves nothing behind. No streaks. No spots. Just crystal-clear glass.

What else helps?

  • Microfibre magic: Soft cloths are great for buffing edges without scratching
  • Timing is everything: We avoid cleaning in direct sunlight, it just dries too fast
  • No chemicals: Pure water does the job beautifully, without residue or film
  • Technique: Our soft-bristle brushes gently lift dirt without smearing it around

Traditional vs modern methods

Old-school squeegees can still do a decent job on smaller panes or indoor glass, but for most modern homes and hard-to-reach places, pole-fed is king. It’s safer (no ladders), faster, and gives consistently better results.

Whether you’re in Chichester, Knowle, or right by the sea in Emsworth, we’ll make sure your windows are streak-free and sunshine-ready.

Book a clean with Willoughby’s Windows – your panes will thank you.
