Why window frames and sills need as much attention as the glass

It’s not all about the shine, the edges matter too

So, your windows are gleaming. The light’s pouring in. The glass is spotless. But have you looked down lately?

If your window frames and sills are looking a bit worse for wear (mould spots, green fuzz, maybe a suspicious patch of peeling paint) it’s time to give them some love.

At Willoughby’s Windows, we always clean the glass and the frames. Because honestly, what’s the point in shiny panes if they’re surrounded by grime?

What happens when you ignore the frames?

  • Mould and mildew thrive in damp, shaded corners
  • Discolouration (especially on uPVC) builds up quickly
  • Wooden frames can rot if dirt traps moisture
  • Paint peels, cracks and looks unloved

In short: dirty frames ruin the effect and shorten the life of your windows.

Types of frames and what they need

  • uPVC: Looks sharp when clean, but picks up grime easily. Needs regular wiping and occasional deep cleans to keep white frames looking white.
  • Wood: Needs more care. Dirt holds moisture against the surface, which leads to rot. Regular cleaning and occasional repainting help preserve it.
  • Aluminium: Durable, but can oxidise and discolour over time. A clean surface means fewer issues.

Where it’s worst in Southern Hampshire

If you live near trees (hello Swanmore and Bishop’s Waltham), you’ll notice green mould building up on frames. Coastal areas like Hayling Island might get more salt residue. And city spots like Winchester collect a fair bit of traffic grime.

Our frame philosophy

Clean glass is good. Clean glass with clean frames? Even better.

Every time we clean your windows, we make sure the frames and sills get the attention they deserve – no half jobs here.
